New COVID Strain Emerges, Raising Concerns About Transmissibility

Symptoms and Transmission

The latest variant behind the current surge in infections exhibits symptoms similar to earlier variants of SARS. It is characterized by fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Studies are ongoing to determine the transmissibility of the new strain, known as JN1.

FLiRT Variant

In April, a group of virus strains known as FLiRT variants emerged. These variants are named after the technical names of their two mutations. While the FLiRT variants have not caused widespread concern, they highlight the ongoing evolution of the virus.

CDC Monitoring

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively monitoring the new strain, JN1. The CDC advises individuals to stay informed about the latest COVID-19 developments and to take precautions such as wearing masks, social distancing, and getting vaccinated.
