John Tenta: A Canadian Giant in the World of Sumo and Pro Wrestling

Early Life and Sumo Career

John Tenta, born on June 22, 1963, was a Canadian athlete who excelled in both sumo wrestling and professional wrestling. Starting his sumo career in 1985, Tenta quickly rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of sekiwake in 1989. During his time as a sumoto, he adopted the fighting name Komaji and had several notable victories.

Professional Wrestling Legacy

In the early 1990s, Tenta transitioned to professional wrestling, joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Under the name Earthquake, he became one of the most recognizable wrestlers of the era. Known for his massive frame, standing at 6'7" and weighing 487 pounds, Earthquake faced off against some of the biggest stars in the sport, including Hulk Hogan and Hulk Hogan.

Earthquake often teamed up with Typhoon, portrayed by Fred Ottman. Together, they formed the tag team known as The Natural Disasters. The team's size and power made them formidable opponents, and they held the WWF Tag Team Championship on multiple occasions.

Later Career and Death

Following his time in the WWF, Earthquake competed in various independent promotions and had a brief stint in Japan. He later returned to the WWF in 1998 under a new gimmick as Golga. However, his second WWF run was not as successful, and he eventually left the company in 2000.

Tragically, John Tenta passed away on June 7, 2006, at the age of 42. He had been battling bladder cancer for several years and succumbed to the disease at his home in Florida.
